Disappointed...
I vex....I vex for true.......and worse I tired. Once again the Groovy Soca Monarch Finals missed its mark for me. From the comments of the few people who formed part of my informal poll, I was not the only one who felt cheated by the organizers of the show. First thing it started late. I rushed down at 9:30 p.m. fully expecting to have missed most of the show. To my consternation, I had only managed to miss Esteban and Lady Empress. Damn... why couldn't I have missed Dean Roberts, Vicke, Floopsy, Phyness, Soca Princess, Nintus, Marianne, Lady Ce Ce, and Toya as well?
Now do you feel my pain? It is almost as if the organizers are trying their best to punish those of us who insist on going to every carnival show. Did I not have enough of the mediocrity and lackluster performances in the tents? There it is funny and I can joke with my friends about it. At a final it is just too much. It wears me down and makes me want to scratch out my eyes to get away from the pain of listening of what is being presented. Added to that, the music was noisy and at times frankly irritating.
I tell you I vex. By the time the few performers who were good came on, I had been so beaten down by the others that I could not muster the energy to get excited. In a kind of dispassionate way I can appreciate the performances of Ashanti, TC Brown and King Fa Redd. I could also tell that Teddyson John, QPid and Alpha were a cut above the rest but for the life of me I could not dance or wave....I could barely applaud. Why the torture? Just choose the best ten groovy tunes and give us a good show. Forget about the rest. They will get over it. I am not sure I can another year.
By the time the long night was over the three who stood tallest were as follows:

Both Groovy and Power show
Both Groovy and Power show should have 10-12 performers the most, like Trinidad. A lot of these artist don't belong on that big stage as yet, they don't take time to write and construct a proper tune every thing is " kixx" for them. I can just imagine what i will have to watch for power when some of the so called kixxy artist come on. Is that the message we want to send overseas? i doubt it. I hope lucians remember that the crap artist they support some times that artist can win and represent us in Trinidad, oh what a shame that will be.
Our Mediocre Music
The problem is St. Lucians appreciate mediocre things, hence the reason we had to sit through almost 4 hours of nonsense last night. The unfortunate thing is this low level of music and performaces will again torture patrons at the Soca Monarch finals. When we have persons like Frost/Viking, Esteban, Jessica and others performing lack luster mediocre songs you are left no other choice but to be disappointed. It's quite disappointing to see that our music has yet again taken a nose dive after so much work went into improving the quality for the past couple of years.
i do agree,we need to be more professional and cut the list
i do agree with that...too many perfomers and most dont deserve to be there...with performers like marie ann,toya,ce ce lady empress,whats it,,is it just to add numbers,,,,we need to take a serious look at the number of finalist and give people something to really enjoy,i do understand in the tents people come for a laugh but not at the finals..i even more disappointed in the power soca finalist.

I echo your sentiments. This was the least enjoyable Groovy show EVER manifested by the lackluster swaying and minimal waving!! The list of qualifiers did hint to the impending mediocre performances and disappointments. As a carnival fanatic, I only pray that there will not be a repeat at the Soca Monarch (sniff sniff)
