I know you maybe wondering where is the write-up for ‘H2O Wet Fete 2009’, well let’s just say it took me that long to recover.

Recover from what, you may say? First off from getting wet over and over; after all it was wet fete remember. From laughing my head off at some of the unique and in some cases imaginative swimwear some of the patrons, both male and female, turned out in. From all the slamming musical entertainment put on by some of Saint Lucia’s leading soca artistes, from all the shouting and screaming…I still don’t have my voice back as yet, over some the adventurous people that dared to venture on the much touted ‘40 Foot Slide’ and of course from all the fine Lucian beauties that make it impossible for me, year after year, to miss a wet fete.

With my house being mere minutes away from the Samaan’s Park venue, I set my departure time at 3pm, one hour after the scheduled start time. On arriving a nice crowd has already converged all around the park with a steady stream of patrons making their way on the inside.

Approaching the venue it was clear that patrons had and were going to take this ‘wet thing’ serious. Clad and armed with rubber-duckies, diving masks and goggles, bath towels and robs, shower caps and shower curtains, raincoats and umbrellas, water pistols of all shapes and sizes and the other seemingly medieval primitive water devises, the male attendants streamed into the park. And whereas the males sought to cover up, the female mantra was ‘bare as you dare’ and they did dare. Nuff said, check out the photos for more on that.

With me now being in a bamboozled state…clearly from the effects of all the fine Saint Lucia beauties and not alcohol, I recall the sprinklers coming on and the ‘high-rise foam thrower’ doing its thing. A few minutes later Deejay Atomic of Power Plus was outlining the criteria for getting on the ‘40 Foot Slide.’ No watches, no hard pieces of jewellery like earrings and clothing with studs, no small pieces of hard metal or hard plastic, No This, No That…all in an attempt to safeguard the albeit sturdily constructed exterior but at the same time fragile plastic interior of the slide. Patrons headed his warnings as no incidents were recorded.

By 8pm a massive crowd was on hand to take in the music, the water, the foam, the entertainers, and all of the surrounding sights of Wet Fete 2009. In the end, it was a very successful event, one that has certainly cemented…or should I say soaked itself into the island’s carnival calendar.
